I'm surprised that wired article doesn't mention the MusicBrainz project. It works very well, and is accessible in a lot of different ways. For a while there I had my bittorrent app downloading to a directory that would periodically be gone through by a perl script, which would tag the mp3s with data from musicbrainz, then use the resulting id3's to file the mp3s away according to the file structure I like. It was pretty slick (altho broken at the moment).
