October 2008 Archives
Page of 3US dates will now precede the projected tours of New Zealand and Australia for 2009. Years of Refusal now has a release date of February 23rd, which will also see the start of a lengthy US tour.
That's my Angels & Airwaves photo being used illegally on the A&A page on lala.com. They appropriated my photo from Flickr despite it clearly being labeled "ALL RIGHTS RESERVED."
Why do companies jump through all the music related copyright hoops and then go to Flickr and steal photos?
Are photo-related copyrights somehow less important?
I think not.
I suppose they think linking back to my Flickr photo lets them off the hook, but they are wrong. All Rights Reserved means exactly that.
The thing that really burns me up about this is by using this image, they could be getting me into a ton of trouble. Many times bands make me sign a contract that states I will not use the photos I take for commercial gains or reuse them on other sites, and by Lala.com stealing my photo, they are doing just that.
If you wonder why less and less of my work is ending up on Flickr, now you know.
A huge tip of the hat to the lovely Kathryn Yu (one of the best photographers around) for giving me the heads up.
**UPDATE** - A few hours after this post went up Lala.com has taken down all the artist photos on their site. The Modern Age, a fellow victim, has a much more eloquent take on the whole matter. There is also a very long Flickr thread about this whole situation. I was lucky, they only stole one of my photos. They stole 17 photos from Kathryn Yu. 17!

The Celtics begin the defense of their 17th World Championship tonight in Boston. Are you ready? Paul Pierce is:
"Most guys come in full of champagne and caviar after a season like that," coach Doc Rivers said. "Paul realized winning feels good and said, 'I want to do it again.'"He's quicker and faster this year. He's probably at the age now where he does have to focus on weight and all that other stuff, but it's great to see him come back like this."
KG is already locked in:
But the Celtics are old and wise enough to realize their reign will not last forever. Pierce turned 31 this month, and he is the youngest of the Big Three - Kevin Garnett is 32, Ray Allen 33. Garnett talks of "two more summers as short as this one was."
And Danny Ainge got a contract extension and promotion.
Yay basketball!

Mrs. Leaf and I braved the unseasonably warm weather yesterday and took in miles 18 and 19 of the 33rd Annual Marine Corps Marathon. It was a lot of fun and the weather was just gorgeous. Quite a few people seemed to hit the wall as they came around the corner near the Capitol Building, but there was a high school band playing songs like "The Theme From Rocky" to get them going again. Pretty cool. One of my co-workers finished 308th. Out of like 18,000. Jeebus.

Wow. Unlike the show I saw last Saturday, I couldn't have been more impressed with the show Lykke Li put on at the Black Cat last Sunday. I was totally unprepared for how hip-hop her show was. She's the Swedish Shakira. Her hips don't lie!

Rumor has it that Morrissey and Marr (along with Joyce and Rourke) very well might be there next year. If a Smiths Reunion actually happens, of course I will go, but honestly I hope they don't do it. Morrissey's never been above doing this strictly for the money, but even this seems like a stretch for him. Besides, everyone holds them up on such a high pedestal, it should be a shame if that all came crashing down.
Plus, I might spontaneously combust if I can't get a photo pass for that gig.
**UPDATE** Yay! Not happening. I honestly think it will be a cold day in hell before Morrissey does anything that helps Mike Joyce out financially in any way other than the occasional reissue, repackage job. Thanks to reader Guitar for the linkage.
Probably my favorite Beasties song and a pretty sweet video to boot.
I really, really wanted to get one of the new Macbooks, but once I saw there was no firewire port, that was a dealbreaker (and not just for me). So I ended up saving a bunch of money by buying a refurbished Black Macbook for about $400 or $500 off of the original price, and got everything I needed in a new laptop. Score!
Anyone want to buy an iBook?

The first in a series of posts showcasing my eternal appreciation for the fine art of the perfect backing vocal. Nailing the backing vocal is the easiest and best way to take me to musical nirvana.
Just listen here as Ed transforms "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" as he comes in when Thom sings "Turn me on to phantoms / I follow to the edge of the earth" at the 2:11 mark.
Perfection.
...if I did not mention the passing of the Red Sox post-season chances on Sunday. Surviving Grady has the right perspective and I am in "agreeance." I'm bummed the Sox lost, but at the same time I am kind of glad to have the next two weeks of my life back. And I would be lying if I said a (very) small portion of me wasn't pulling for the Phils. I think that city is due.
Also, it will be interesting to see what kind of moves the Sox make over the summer, with 'Tek and everyone.
Of course, softening the blow a bit is the prospect of Boston Celtics basketball in the next week or so. w00t!
Total wankers. I was cringing the entire time.
I covered this show as a favor for a Flickr friend that had to bow out at the last minute. That's the last time I'll be seeing these jokers. More photos will be online soon, I'll post a link to the entire set of photos when they are up.
**UPDATE** More photos here.
Had a wonderful time on Honeymoon Part One. Got some (much needed) rest and relaxation in by the beach, did some yoga, got a massage, rode some bikes, drank mucho champagne and fell asleep each night to the sound of the ocean. Not too shabby.
Mr. Pink was VERY happy to see me last night, less so after D.C. United and the Sox had my divided attention.
Regular posting will resume next week.
Until then, go to NPR and check out the set Ra Ra Riot played last Sunday at the Black Cat. Coolfer and I went but were so exhausted by the time that they went on that we left after four or five songs. But I loved what little bit I did see.
Things we did at our wedding that we feel confident in saying you probably did not do or will not do at yours:

- Hung out with Torry Holt right before the ceremony (The St. Louis Rams were staying at our hotel).
- Walked down the aisle to a Spiritualized song.
[mp3] Spiritualized | Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (Elvis Version)
- First-danced to the Super Furry Animals (Mrs. Leaf's choice, not mine! Honest).
[mp3] Super Furry Animals | The Gift That Keeps Giving
- Took wedding photos at the Ballston metro stop.
- Wore wing-tipped Converse.
- Put photos of Mr. Pink on the table cards.
- Requested a Jamiroquai song.
[mp3] Jamiroquai | Alright
- Went out after the reception was over and had drinks with some random dude dressed entirely in camouflage (weird!).
And yes, we played "Wonderwall" as the last song of the night.

We had a fucking blast and by all accounts, so did everyone else. More photos soon!
All photos by Jamie Windon aka The Blonde Photographer.
Yes! - The Red Sox are playing Tampa Bay in the ALCS. Rock!
Maybe? Hey, The Future Mrs. Leaf and I are going to be in Florida next week! Maybe we can scalp tickets and go to one of the games! YaWooooo! Nomah!
Crap. They're in Boston when we are down there. Oh well. But after attending Game One of the NBA Finals in which the MIGHTY Boston Celtics bitch-slapped the pathetic LA Lakers (and all the "experts") to win their 17th NBA title, perhaps I should not push my luck.
Besides, We'll be down there for Honeymoon, Part One.
That's right, we are getting married this weekend. The site won't be updated for a while, but I hope you'll still be here when we get back.
Rock.
PS - Celtics v Sixers tonight in preseason action. It's On!
Basketball, I missed you.
I am a bit spoiled when it comes to Stereolab. When I lived in NYC from '97-'03 I must have seen them 10 times in that period and I never paid for a single show. My roommate and one of my best friends both worked for Elektra, so I could always find a free ticket when they came through. Looking back I don't think I realized that I was getting to see the band on a regular basis smack in the middle of their heyday. Much like Luna, I took these guys for granted because they were always around, always releasing records and always playing shows in the city.
Five or so years on and one amazing show in D.C. and I am falling back in love with the 'Lab. it certainly doesn't hurt that they are touring behind their supremely catchy new record Chemical Chords (pick it up if you haven't already). The set alternated between old faves ("Ping Pong", "Lo Boob Oscillator") and soon to be faves ("Neon Beanbag") and was totally enthralling. I am so mad that NPR wasn't there (are they out of money for the concert budget or something, they've been very silent in the last few months), but luckily NYC Taper was on the scene at Irving Plaza.
My only regrets were leaving before the band played "Cybele's Reverie" (I was exhausted) and not getting to hear the dearly departed Mary Hansen sing back up vocals on songs like "Lo Boob Oscillator." I am a sucker for backing vocals and Mary was one of the best. That was my first time seeing the band since her passing and she was definitely missed.
The band are on tour in the US and Canada until the end of the month. Go see 'em!

THE GOOD:
The Tunes: Hard not to love their decidedly retro Editors-meet-Phil Spector arena ready pub rock. "Geraldine" is a total smash, as is "Go Square Go."
The Accents: If it's not scottish, it's crap!
The Look: Poofy hairdos, leather jackets and Ray-Bans. They've got the retro look down.
The Crowd: It was crowded without being packed and everyone was really into the show. It was a great vibe. Also, I got to chat with Howard Wolfson, who is incredibly nice and a great guy.
The Openers: By far the best set I've seen the Soft Complex do.
The Bad:
The Sound: I really hate to play the sound nazi card (because I absolutely hate it when other people do it) but at times I think the sound at the Rock n Roll Hotel might be the worst in the city. I think the extremely low ceilings are to blame, but I have yet to walk out of that club saying "Wow, they sounded amazing tonight!" Pela came closest earlier in the year but that's the only show I can think of. On Friday all I could hear was the bass and the vocals, the guitars were all over the place and not in a good way.
The Roadies: The band positioned a very large roadie at the side of the stage and he refused to let anyone use the downstairs bathrooms (you have to walk by the side of the stage and down a long hallway to get to access said lavatories). Plus, he wasn't very nice about it. Methinks someone (and by that, I mean the band) are a bit too big for their britches.
The Lies: Lead singer James Allan told the crowd this was their favorite gig on the tour. Yes, I am sure a mostly filled Rock n Roll Hotel holds no water to Radio City Music Hall. Please.
I would definitely go check out the band when they come back through in January. Hopefully that gig, wherever it is, will have good sound and access to all of the venues bathrooms.
Jeebus! Look at all these great shows on Saturday!
Black Cat

Jukebox The Ghost, Say Hi & Junior League Band, $12
I STILL haven't seen Jukebox The Ghost (although I really cannot get into their album), but I am more bummed about missing Say Hi. They were great when I saw them earlier this year.
9:30 Club
Chromeo & Treasure Fingers - SOLD OUT
Chromeo was pretty damn good when I saw them at the Virgin Festival in August. Should be a fun show.
Rock and Roll Hotel

Evangelicals, These United States (CD RELEASE PARTY), Parenthetical Girls, The Silent Years, $12
Man, I haven't seen tUS in what seems like forever. it's been really satisfying to see them get love from Daytrotter, Brooklyn Vegan and other bigtime online outlets. So happy for Jesse, Tom and Co. You'd be hard pressed to find nicer people in this town.
Velvet Lounge
Matmos and a whole bunch of other bands as part of the Sonic Circuits Festival.
Which one will I be at? None of the above. I'll be at the D.C. United game on Saturday.
I'm going to a gig tonight, though: Glasvegas & Soft Complex at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Looking forward to it. If you need a Glasvegas primer, head over to Gotham Acme, aka Glasvegas-central. Not only did H.W. interview the band, he interviewed their producer. Producer interviews: Some say best.
See you there!
I skipped the Jenny Lewis show last night to check out the New Kids show at the Verizon Center and have no regrets about doing so.

Seems like the price on everything has shot up in the last month or so, especially breakfast products. My regular sized smoothie at Robeks went from $4.94 to $5.13 three weeks ago and then today my bagel & small OJ pairing at Au Bon Pain went from $4.80 to $5.18. Guess it is time to stop eating out.
Did they talk about this during the debate last night or was it all shout outs to their grade schools?
I really enjoyed this documentary on Dig Out Your Soul. I'll have a proper review of the record on Monday.
Here is the ticket info for the tour. I already snagged a pair of tix for the Patriot Center. Super excited about seeing them in a venue of that size.

After the hype and the accompanying backlash against The Black Kids I had to go down to the Cat and check them out last Saturday. The verdict: I thought they were great. Great energy, great hooks and lots of fun. I haven't listened to any of their recorded output but they definitely won me over with their live show, which was one of the loudest sets I've ever heard at the Black Cat.
The Virgins opened up and while I'm not sure the world needs yet another dancey, indie-rock J. Giles Band, they are good at what they do. But over the course of a 40 minute set, their one trick started wearing thin.
In case you want another POV, Valerie has a great review of the show over at DCist.
