SUPER FURRY ANIMALS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM (currently untitled)
Digital release 16th March on the band's own website - www.superfurry.com
Physical release April 21 on Rough Trade Records
Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce that Super Furry Animals are currently hard at work on their 9th studio album in Cardiff.. Since 2007's 'Hey Venus' the band have been keeping busy with their various side projects including Daf and Guto's acclaimed work as part of The Peth with Rhys Ifans, Cian's forthcoming Acid Casuals release and Som Bom techno nights in London and of course Gruff's Mercury nominated work with Neon Neon.
Currently with a tracklisting but without a title the band promise; "Musically it's based around riffs and grooves we've been playing around with over the last few years. We have enough now for a whole album so even though it's still very melodic we thought we could leave off the acoustic ballads for the time being."
"It's recognisable as a melodic SFA record, but is very focused musically as a cohesive album. And no country rock as Daf has developed a pedal steel phobia. Which has confined the great Nashvillian instrument along with the Saxophone to the banned instrument directive of the SFA board. there's only one slow number which isn't slow at all."
Longtime cohorts Pete Fowler will combine with legendary Japanese artist Tanaami for the album artwork, which is sure to result in a feast for the eyes.
The album is due for digital release on the 16th March via the bands own website (www.superfurry.com), the physical following on the 21st of April on Rough Trade Records.
Super Furry Animals have some more tricks up their sleeve which we will be announcing a little closer to the release date!
Tracklisting after the jump! Looks like there is one Welsh song!
Let's just say that traveling call was a bit dubious. But, so was the non-call that preceded it.
Not sure why Singler was so close to the sideline on the final play, but I could see that the baseline was open as soon as Wake started their offense. Oh well. Credit Wake for calling a great play out of a time out. A much deserved win and a fun game to watch. But I think it does the school a disservice when the fans rush the court like that. Your # 4 in the nation, act like you've been there before.
Also, the only team to play worse defense than Duke in a late game situation? Florida State.
Jeebus, it's been all Bruce all the time around the internets lately. Bruce just announced a new U.S. tour, and don't forget about that Super Bowl performance this weekend. What will he play? Post Rock has a good idea (and some insider info).
Best of all, Chris Klimek has an in-depth examination of all of Bruce's horrible cover art and Pitchfork records Ted Leo playing "Dancing in the Dark." Best.
Pretty good day around these parts. I'll be hitting one million page views at some point in the next few hours and I got interviewed by Washingtonian.
So, welcome Washingtonian masses. Feel free to check out my favorite CDs from 2008, take a look at some concert photos, read some concert reviews, get your fill of cat pictures or browse the archives.
Dan Deacon just announced a new tour in support of his forthcoming album, Bromst. The last night of the tour is in D.C.

I am by no means a DD fan, but I am super excited about the openers, Future Islands. I've been a fan of theirs for a long time.

I recently picked up the 4 disc Weller at the BBC set and it is mind-blowingly incredible. So far my favorite song is "Thinking Of You", which, upon a little research, I discovered to be a Sister Sledge song. Who knew? Here is a live version I found on YouTube. Check out Chic doing the disco version of this song for a little compare/contrast action.
You're probably coming around these parts looking for some sort of inauguration coverage/photos, but sadly, it is not to be. I actually boarded a flight early Tuesday morning to Vegas and am here all work for a day job-related trade show. So don't expect this piece to be updated much. Instead, check out my Tumblr or Twitter feed for the latest.
If its inauguration coverage you are looking for, head over to DCist, who I am told kicked mucho ass coverage-wise yesterday. I wouldn't know, I was running around the Vegas Convention Center all day. I have not seen minute one of the ceremony, much less read anything about it. Help me DVR and Bloglines, you're my only hope.
In other news, I am totally down with Old Vegas and Fremont Street. It beats the strip all to hell.
As I've said before, I'm not much of a Metallica fan. I don't own any of their albums, just a promo double disc set called Madatory Metallica that I picked up from a friend at their label solely because it had their cover of "Breadfan" on it. It is, without a doubt, my favorite Metallica song.
Last week's show at the Verizon Center went a long way in making me think differently about the band. I can't remember a bigger show or band that treated photographers so nicely. There was no photo release to sign. We had full access to the stage area (they were playing in the round and we had no restrictions in the photo pit). We got three songs to shoot and other than the lazer light show for the first song, the lighting was incredible. And most importantly, the three songs we shot lasted about 25 minutes. It's rare that I get to shoot a band that long and I certainly appreciated it. Also, on a side note, their photo pass is the biggest I have ever seen.

I'm not exactly a fan of Metallica, but they were pretty great last night. At least the three songs I saw. I'll have a full gallery up soon.
Also, if anyone is looking for something to do tonight, don't forget the Middle Distance Runner show at the Rock n Roll Hotel. They're playing with Mobius Band. Should be a great show. Instrumental Analysis has MDR's new song "Brother John" for your downloading pleasure.

I hope Summers has plenty of Stella on hand.
Keep in mind this doesn't include Celtics @ Cavs tonight on ESPN (we need a W in the worst way. Obvs.) or the Panthers v. Cards game Saturday night.
BTW, the Panthers are totally winning the Superbowl.
Sounds beautiful but the tunes are totally unfocused. It's like he basically made Malajusted all over again, only without something as catchy as "Alma Maters". The mighty Mozzer does this every few albums. He puts out a few great records and then runs out of ideas before flailing around a bit and regaining his ground. Strangeways Here We Come and Viva Hate led to Kill Uncle, Your Arsenal and Vauxhall & I (my two favorite Moz records) led to Southpaw Grammar (which I hated at the time but quite like now) and Malajusted. I very well might like this album after I spend some time with it, but right now it sounds like a lush album utterly devoid of hooks. I can't hum you any of the tunes on this record after one listen.
Maybe there are some killer b-sides that were left off the album? For all the hoopla surrounding his comeback album You Are The Quarry, I felt his best work from that period were the three b-sides from the Irish Blood... single.
I shudder to think at how many photos I shot over the past 12 months. To give you an idea, here's a list of some of the bands I shot in 2008: Editors, Buffalo Tom, Fiery Furnaces, Super Furry Animals (twice), Angels & Airwaves, From The Jam, Say Hi, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige, Ra Ra Riot, John Vanderslice, Stephen Malkmus, Jens Lekmen, The Dodos, The Big Sleep, Les Savy Fav, The City Veins (twice), Robbers on High Street, The Cure, Finger 11, Seether, Live, Chevelle, Liars, Radiohead, Pela, Modest Mouse, R.E.M., Ted Leo, Pearl Jam, 20+ bands at Whartscape, The Dirt Bombs, Spiritualized (twice), The Cool Kids (twice), Redman & Method Man, Ghostface & Raekwon, Q-Tip (twice), Nas, De la Soul, We Are Scientists (twice), Nine Inch Nails, Iggy & the Stooges, Lil' Wayne, Paramore, Underworld, Duffy & many more at the Virgin Mobile Festival in Baltimore, Title Tracks, The Hold Steady, Jana Hunter (twice), Thao Nguyen & TGDSD, The Jonas Brothers, Shudder to Think (twice) Stereophonics, The Kooks, Oasis (twice-kind of), Paul Weller (twice), Silversun Pickups, Stereolab, The Black Kids, James, David Byrne, New Kids on the Block, Lykke Li, Cold War Kids, The Whigs, Kings of Leon, Smashing Pumpkins, Usher, Vampire Weekend, Nada Surf and Ryan Adams.
And that's not counting the Washington Wizards, Washington Kastles, Legg Mason Tennis Tournament, 20+ D.C. United games and all the photos of my cat. But I'm not complaining. Just the opposite in fact. I hope to do it bigger and better in 2009. I can sleep later.
Here are a few of my faves from 2008.
